I’m not a Clippers fan. Actually I’m an anti-fan, given that I jump around like an excited puppy when the Clippers fail. Recently though, I’ve been a bit sad for them. They seem to suck worse than any franchise in the country. I mean, their suckiness is literally unparalleled in all of sports (except the Lions). After a long, hard think earlier today, I figured out why they suck the past few years. The answer is simple: Mike Dunleavy.
You see, to be a good coach in the NBA you must adapt. You must change to meet the needs of your team and capitalize on your strengths. Watching the Clippers this season, it’s pretty easy to realize they are doing the exact opposite. To sit through a Clippers game, you have to be a die-hard NBA fan. They are so inept at offensive, it shocking and appauling at the same time. They stagnate, they flounder, Baron heaves a 3 and they lose. They lose over and over again.
It’s not like they don’t have talent. They just signed two of the best players in the league in Baron Davis and Marcus Camby. They have a solid center in Kaman and small forward in Ricky Davis. They also have some great young talent with Al Thornton and Eric Gordon. When glancing at the personnel you would think they could score more than 88 points a game.
You can see why the Clippers are 1-7. They can’t score, or shoot, or do much of anything. This comes back to Mike, big Mike Dunleavy. Mike Dunleavy is the problem, and he’s already pissing off their star point guard, Baron Davis. Baron is overwhelmed by Mike’s plays. I can picture it now, he’s trying to shove all these pick and rolls, isos, and half court sets on guys who love to run and gun. Guys like Eric Gordon, Ricky Davis and Baron who excel in a fast break offenses where they’re free to use their basketball IQ and slash. Baron has already waved off Mike, because he adjusts the plays when he sees the other team drooling because they know they have an easy win and no challenge.
It’s time to fire Mike Dunleavy. The Clippers need a coaching change like multiple heart-attack victim needs a transplant. This guy is a classic ‘over coacher’. He’s the guy who doesn’t give his players any slack and runs 30 X and Os plays a half. He’s against letting Baron coach on the floor, which is what he’s good at. The young guys look up to Baron and Camby, so you don’t have to try as hard as a coach. They should try to get a young, running coach in there to spice up this team. It’s obvious the Clippers aren’t winning with a half court set team, and they are in the west. It’s time, its time for Mike to take an extended vacation.

1The Dunce has 2 years left on a huge contract. I doubt he’s going anywhere. I was smart enough to cancel season tickets.
